How To Cover Cystic Acne With Makeup

Hey girl.  So this month has been exceptionally rough for me.  Everything in my life is going great.  However, out of nowhere, my face took a turn for the worst.  At the beginning of the month, I developed horrific cystic acne on my chin 🙁  And it just wouldn’t stop until my entire chin was covered in huge painful red bumps.

My skin is generally acne prone.  It’s a struggle I’ve dealt with since my early twenties.  I’m covered with reminders of previous break outs.  Hyper-pigmentation and indented scars keep me from forgetting some of my skin’s troubled past.  Having said that, I’ve never experienced such a horrific breakout all at once and in such a short period of time.

I’m not sure what caused it.  All I know is that it’s going to take a long time to heal.  In the meantime, I’ve learned how to effectively cover cystic acne with makeup and I’m going to share it with you.

The Best Makeup For Cystic Acne

Believe it or not, it’s gotten way better than it was at the beginning of the breakout.

Texture caused by cystic acne is not going to magically go away when you put makeup on.  You will still see bumps on the skin and there is absolutely no way around that, especially if your acne is pretty severe.  However, you can slightly minimize the look of texture by using the right foundation.  I’ll go over that in a bit.

When you cover cystic acne with makeup, the goal is to cover up the redness and hyper-pigmentation.  This in turn helps make the acne less noticeable to you and those around you.

The best makeup for cystic acne is definitely something that is full coverage.  I would stay away from extremely matte foundations though, as I find those tend to accentuate the texture.

Instead, I would go with something that has a luminous matte or natural finish.  Remember, the texture will still be there, but at least you are not accentuating it more.

With your foundation you’ll also need a good powder and I also recommend a setting spray to make sure your makeup stays put.

If you have a lot of redness, you can also use a redness relieving primer to help cancel it out.

Step 1

If you’re using a primer, go ahead and apply it after you’ve finished your skincare routine.

Step 2

Dot your foundation onto the area that needs to be covered.

Step 3

Here’s the trick for the best coverage (in my opinion).  Using a flat kabuki brush, press the foundation into your skin.  Keep pressing until the foundation is blended in.

Pressing the foundation in is really the best method to help you cover cystic acne with makeup.  I feel that doing it this way gives a fuller coverage than if you swirl the brush around.

Also, I use pretty strong acne medications that tend to dry out my skin.   So I find that my skin is more likely to get flaky if I use a swirling motion with the brush.

Now pick up some powder and gently press it in to set your foundation.

Lastly, I recommend using a setting spray to help lock in your makeup so that it stays put throughout the day or night.  Make sure it’s a makeup extender spray.
