Basic Makeup Essentials For Beginners

Are you just getting into makeup?  Feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the different types of makeup products out there?  Need to know what the best basic makeup essentials for beginners are?  Then girl, you’ve come to the right place!

In this article, I’m going to go over the basic makeup essentials for beginners, so you know exactly what you’ll need as you stock up on your first makeup products!

The Ultimate Guide To Basic Makeup Essentials For Beginners

Primer

The first item you’ll need is primer.  Primer creates a smooth canvas for your foundation.  Many primers will blur out your pores and help to absorb oil, allowing your foundation to stay on longer.  Your primer will go on before your foundation.

Foundation

Foundation is going to be your base.  The purpose of foundation is to even out your skin in terms of tone and texture.  There are many different types of foundation, so make sure you choose the correct formula for your skin.

Concealer

Concealer is used to cover up dark circles under the eyes.  It’s also going to help brighten up the under eye area, so you typically want a color that is one to two shades lighter.

Powder

One of the most basic makeup essentials for beginners is face powder.  You use powder to set your foundation and concealer.  It also helps keep shine away.  There are different types of powders; some are slightly pigmented and others are colorless.  A nice translucent powder is great for beginners.

Bronzer

You’ll notice that when you put your foundation, concealer and powder on, your face may look a little flat.  That’s where bronzer comes in.  Bronzer is going to bring some color and life back onto your face.  Plus, it’s also going to help bring back some dimension.

Blush

Blush is for adding some color back to your cheeks.  For a natural look, you’ll want to pick a shade that matches your cheeks when they are flushed.

Eyeshadow

Eyeshadow is what you put on your eyelids.  The purpose of eyeshadow is to emphasize your eyes.  It also helps bring out your eye color.  Since you’re a beginner, I would recommend sticking to natural/neutral palette to start off.

Eyeliner

When it comes to basic makeup essentials for beginners, eyeliner is a must!  Eyeliner will really make your eyes stand out.  You can use it to simply define your eyes, make your eyelashes appear thicker, or you can create a more dramatic winged eyeliner look for the evening.

Mascara

Mascara is what goes on your eyelashes.  I like to think of it as the finishing touch to the eyes.  It just helps bring the eye makeup together and open up the eyes.  You can apply it to both your top and bottom lashes for a doll-like effect.

Brow Pencil

Your eyebrows frame your face, so you want to fill them in and shape them as needed with a brow pencil (or brow powder).  Brow pencils are convenient because most come with a spoolie on one end, which you will use to brush out your brows.
